{"id":122276,"date":"2021-12-15T04:31:56","date_gmt":"2021-12-15T09:31:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/?p=122276"},"modified":"2023-02-22T12:37:00","modified_gmt":"2023-02-22T17:37:00","slug":"chinese-kuaizhou-1a-rocket-launch-fails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/chinese-kuaizhou-1a-rocket-launch-fails\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese Kuaizhou-1A rocket launch fails"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HELSINKI \u2014 A Kuaizhou-1A solid rocket failed after liftoff late Tuesday with the loss of a pair of commercial satellites to test navigation enhancement for autonomous driving.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kuaizhou-1A light-lift solid rocket lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert at 9 p.m. Eastern Dec. 14, as indicated by airspace closure notices.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chinese state media <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sohu.com\/a\/508460959_114988\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confirmed <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the launch failure hours later, tersely stating that the launch had failed and the specific reasons are being further analyzed and investigated.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flight carried the first two satellites for Geespace, a subsidiary of automaker Geely. The pair were intended to test navigation assistance and connectivity for autonomous driving, according to earlier statements.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The failure is a blow to commercial launch service provider Expace, a subsidiary of giant state-owned missile and defense contractor China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC). CASIC is a separate entity to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), which is the country\u2019s main space contractor and operator of the Long March rockets.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CASIC and Expace had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/chinese-space-firms-present-big-ambitions-at-commercial-space-forum\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at a commercial space forum late November for seven launches in the following three months for a variety of customers. The Kuaizhou-1A will likely be grounded until an investigation is concluded and the causes isolated and addressed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expace had been encouraged by three successful Kuaizhou-1A launches across September, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/china-sets-new-national-launch-record-with-kuaizhou-1a-mission\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">October <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/kuaizhou-1a-rocket-launches-classified-shiyan-11-satellite\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">November<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which followed the Kuaizhou-1A being grounded for one year as a result of a failure in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/chinese-kuaizhou-1a-rocket-launch-ends-in-failure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">September 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CASIC and its subsidiaries also plan an 80-satellite narrowband constellation named Xingyun, with plans to launch at least <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/chinese-space-firms-present-big-ambitions-at-commercial-space-forum\/\">12 Xingyun-2 satellites<\/a> in 2022 to form the second stage of the three-state constellation. It stated similar plans for launches of 12 Xingyun satellites back in 2020, before the previous KZ-1A failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuesday\u2019s mission was the 14th Kuaizhou-1A flight and the second failure. The first launch took place in January 2017. The launcher consists of three solid stages and a liquid propellant upper stage. It is capable of carrying 200 kilograms of payload into a 700-kilometer sun-synchronous orbit (SSO).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The larger Kuaizhou-11 had a first flight in July 2020 which ended in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/first-launch-of-chinese-kuaizhou-11-rocket-ends-in-failure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">failure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A return-to-flight has yet to take place.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The struggles of Expace present potential opportunities for competitors in China\u2019s emerging commercial space sector.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The failure follows a week after a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/chinese-private-firm-galactic-energy-puts-five-satellites-in-orbit-with-second-launch\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> second successful launch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a Ceres-1 light-lift solid rocket by private rocket firm Galactic Energy, which is one of a number of other launch providers emerging in China to compete for commercial contracts.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another state entity spinoff, CAS Space, is preparing its first launch for the first quarter of 2022, and has, like Geespace, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/guangzhou-moves-to-establish-chinese-commercial-space-cluster\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">established facilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Nansha district of the southern city of Guangzhou.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expace however is one of the best funded launch firms in China and has an established industrial chain in Wuhan.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The satellites aboard Tuesday\u2019s flight belonged to Chinese private automaker Geely, which plans to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/automaker-geely-gains-approval-for-satellites-for-self-driving-constellation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> establish a constellation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to provide navigation and connectivity services needed for self-driving cars.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Few details of the satellites had been provided, but Geely has put significant funds into the endeavor.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geely announced plans for a $326 million facility in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, in March 2020. It began manufacturing satellites in October, following license approval from China\u2019s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geely stated it had been encouraged by an NDRC decision to add \u201csatellite internet\u201d to a list of \u201cnew infrastructures\u201d in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/chinas-commercial-satellite-sector-sees-boost-from-new-infrastructure-policy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">April 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, seeing an opportunity to establish an industrial chain including research and development, design, manufacturing, launch and market application for its own satellite network.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Taizhou facility has an estimated production output of over 500 satellites per year, according to a press release. Geespace in September <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AJ_FI\/status\/1443181557515173889\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a deal with CGWIC of CASC for Long March launch services for its GNSS-enhancing and high-speed connectivity satellites.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/zgh.com\/media-center\/news\/2020-04-24-1\/?lang=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in April 2020 stated that two Geely satellites had been transported to Jiuquan for launch in the second half of 2020, while the first satellites <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AJ_FI\/status\/1442416511466053634\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rolled out of Taizhou<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in late September. It is unclear if the satellites lost on Tuesday\u2019s launch are the earlier pair, delayed by Kauizhou-1A launch issues, or a new set from Taizhou.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China opened portions of its space sector to private capital in late 2014. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Policy support and guidance \u2014 including regulations for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/chinese-commercial-launch-sector-regulations-released-new-launch-vehicle-plans-unveiled\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launch <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/shenzhen-offers-support-to-boost-satellite-sector-in-chinese-city\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">small satellites<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and national strategies supporting \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/china-establishes-company-to-build-satellite-broadband-megaconstellation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">satellite internet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d \u2014 as well as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/chinese-commercial-sector-investment-lagging-in-2021\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">investment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from a mix of venture capital and government-linked investment vehicles, has followed in recent years.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuesday\u2019s launch was China\u2019s 51st launch of 2021 and the third failure.
