{"id":112021,"date":"2021-03-11T14:03:47","date_gmt":"2021-03-11T19:03:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/?p=112021"},"modified":"2023-01-23T16:03:01","modified_gmt":"2023-01-23T21:03:01","slug":"china-successfully-launches-new-long-march-7a-on-second-attempt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/china-successfully-launches-new-long-march-7a-on-second-attempt\/","title":{"rendered":"China successfully launches new Long March 7A on second attempt"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HELSINKI \u2014 China launched a new-generation Long March 7A rocket Thursday, sending a classified, experimental payload into geosynchronous transfer orbit.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liftoff from the coastal Wenchang Satellite Launch Center occurred at 12:51 p.m. Eastern March 11. The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp. (CASC), the country\u2019s main space contractor, confirmed launch success 40 minutes later (<a href=\"https:\/\/mp.weixin.qq.com\/s\/xJ3OL2u491cNwW9QhKaSSw\">Chinese<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The payload was the Shiyan-9, or \u201cexperiment-9\u201d, technology verification satellite. It was developed by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), a CASC subsidiary.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The satellite will be mainly used for in-orbit verification tests of new technologies such as space environmental monitoring, CASC stated, without providing further details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Long March 7A is a 60.1-meter-long, 3.35-meter-diameter kerosene and liquid oxygen launch vehicle with four side boosters, capable of delivering up to 7 metric tons of payload to GTO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The launcher draws on new kerosene engine technologies along with a stage modified from the older Long March 3B series, China\u2019s current workhorse rocket, boosting China\u2019s launch options to GTO.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Long March 7A is more capable than the Long March 3B, which can launch 5.5 tons to GTO. By launching from the coast, it also does not incur the cost and <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/rocket-booster-smashes-home-following-chinese-long-march-3b-launch\/\">hazards<\/a> of the inland 3B launches.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CASC plans to carry out 3-5 Long March 7A launches a year by 2025. The launcher can also be used for lunar and deep space missions, the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT) <a href=\"https:\/\/mp.weixin.qq.com\/s\/X9E2UKmP2GSv09fvmTlH1w\">stated<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first launch of the Long March 7A <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/launch-of-chinas-new-long-march-7a-ends-in-failure\/\">failed&nbsp;<\/a>in March 2020. A loss of pressure occurred after first stage separation, which led to engine malfunction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Long March 7A heritage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Long March 7A is a variant of the standard Long March 7. The latter has flown twice and is designed primarily to launch cargo spacecraft to China\u2019s space station.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-112038\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/spacenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/CZ7A-vertical-integration-building-wenchang-CALT.jpg?resize=280%2C421&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"A Long March 7A inside the vertical integration building at Wenchang.\" class=\"wp-image-112038\" height=\"421\" width=\"280\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A Long March 7A inside the vertical integration building at Wenchang. Credit: CALT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 7A uses the same kerolox core and four 2.25-meter-diameter side boosters. It includes an additional hydrolox third stage adopted from the older generation Long March 3B rocket to allow it to send payloads to GTO.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The launcher has a takeoff mass of 573 metric tons according to CALT. It uses 120-ton-thrust YF-100 and 18-ton-thrust YF-115 engines burning kerosene and LOX on the first, second and booster stages. Two 8-ton thrust YF-75 engines burning liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen power the third stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is one of a number of new-generation kerolox and hydrolox rockets developed by China over the past decade. These include the Long March 5, 6, 7 and 8 series of rockets.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Previously China was reliant on the hypergolic Long March 2, 3 and 4 series rockets. The dinitrogen tetroxide and unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine propellant is toxic, corrosive and carcinogenic, requiring expensive safety measures.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new generation rockets are expendable. However the Long March 8 is being developed into a launcher with a recoverable and reusable first stage.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Long March 5B is currently being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/china-assembling-rocket-to-launch-first-space-station-module\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assembled <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at Wenchang to launch the first module for China\u2019s space station. Launch from Wenchang is estimated to take place in mid-late April.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thursday\u2019s launch was China\u2019s sixth of 2021.
